Hawks Lose to 99ers
On Saturday the Hawks travelled to the Gretzky Centre to take on the physical Brantford team.
Brantford took the early lead only 30 seconds in when the Hawks got an unlucky bounce in their own end. Brantford kept up the pace and went up 2-0 two minutes later in the first. The Hawks had a tough time getting shots on net in the first period, including three breakaway chances, with none registering a shot on goal. Brantford was skating fast and on a 2 on 0 chance Parker Campbell was able to get his stick out to poke away the puck and prevent a scoring chance for the strong 99ers team. Brantford weren't the only ones showing their speed, as Ryan Silva was skating hard for the Hawks throughout the entire game and was able to chase down a puck in the first frame to negate an icing.
The Hawks were again out-shot in the second period, but Reggie Gignac was playing solid in net, making every first save and smothering the puck so no rebounds were allowed. Despite the lack of shots, the Hawks were able to tie up the game. Justin Vandervelde got the puck behind the 99ers' net and brought it around and kept whacking until it went it to get the Hawks on the board. The Hawks second goal came from defenceman Tyler Caswell. Cazy brought the puck just past center for the dump and change. Instead of dumping along the boards, Cazy took the shot on net and it was so hard it knocked the Brantford goalie, stick and all, into his own net and past the goal line. The game was all tied up.
The Hawks were able to get some more shots on net in the third, but were still outshot by Brantford who had many scoring opportunities. The 99ers were able to capitalize and the game finished 3-2 in favour of the 99ers.
