True North Strong
The Minor Atom AAA Cambridge Hawks have had an exciting start to 2019. On Tuesday January 8th, the kids took to the ice to face the Brantford 99ers, and coming from behind they brought home a nail biting 3-2 victory - securing their first win of the New Year.

While the kids took a loss to the Hamilton Huskies on January 12th, the next day saw them battle hard against the Huron-Perth Lakers. While the scoreboard didn’t land in the Hawks favour, the on ice play showed just how cohesive and strong this team has become. This past weekend, saw the Hawks represent Canada at the 2019 Nations Cup Tournament in Ann Arbour Michigan. The tournament was set up as a true battle between ten AAA Canadian and ten American teams. The tournament started with round robin play wherein the Cambridge Hawks lost their first two games (against the Chicago Blues and Cleveland Elite) and won their last two games (against Pittsburgh Penguins Elite and the St. Louis Rockets)– landing them in a 4 way tie for 6th place. The Hawks took to the ice early Sunday morning ready to play, defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite by a score of 6-1, earning 2 points for Team Canada. This tournament really showcased how strong this young group of athletes have become. The passing was impressive; they battled hard along the boards and outworked their opponents for the puck. Everything these kids have been practicing each week was on display this weekend – this was particularly true with their penalty kill play. While HAWK goals were plentiful this weekend, it was the assists and the team play that were even more phenomenal! The HAWKS early win helped pave the way to a great Team Canada Victory! While the on ice play was something to write home about, it was the off ice cheering and support that will be remembered for a long time. In true Canadian fashion, these kids stayed for the day – well after their own victory - to rally and support the other Canadian teams – teams that they are often seeded against in regular season. The regular season rivalries quickly faded as they became one under the Canadian flag.  The tournament ended with an amazing Canadian goal with 1.5seconds left on the clock, followed by a spontaneous chorus of ‘Oh Canada’.
