After an eight game losing streak, the Hawks were desparate for a win. Order up a bus, get the kids revved up and head to the Chatham Windsor area for some weekend hockey.
First up were the Chatham Kent Cyclones. The boys got a comfortable two goal lead but then let that evaporate with a couple of penalties. The Hawks scored again to take a 3-2 lead and then fought long and hard to preserve that score to the end. Finally the monkey was off their back.
Back onto the bus and off to face the Windsor Jr. Spitfires. Our last meeting ended in a 2-2 draw so we a knew a battle was brewing. The refs let the boys play for the most part and it was a great end-to-end game. The Spits got on the board first, but the Hawks roared back with four pretty goals to win the game and have a two win day.
It was cause for celebration, and perhaps our guys may have relaxed too much. When the puck dropped for the opening faceoff against the Sun County Panthers on Sunday, the Hawks fell flat on their faces. The Panthers kept rubbing it in for seven unanswered goals until a loan Hawk sniper stopped the bleeding and then finally the game with a painful 7-1 loss.
Truthfully, it wasn't too painful. It felt great to have a couple of wins. You could see the spirits lift and our boys played really well on Saturday. Dig in and keep the energy flowing and see what you guys can accomplish.
