Hawks drop Kitchener for Cup win, December 13, 2012
The Cambridge Minor Atom MD Hawks recently won the Burlington MD Challenge Cup

The Hawks set the tone for the rest of the tournament early in their first game against the Waterloo Timber Wolves, as Nic Lirette was set up by Matthew Mueller for the opening goal before the game reached the 10-second mark. Cambridge pumped in six more goals, with four from Matthew Cummings and two by Zach Schneider, for a 7-1 win. Mueller picked up two more assists in the game. Xavier Moura and Dylan Farrow also had two each, and Justin Luis, Tyler Avelar and Braeden Tavares had one assist apiece. Lirette did damage in Game 2 against the Burlington Bulldogs, scoring the winner in a 2-1 victory. Ethan Gill also scored for the Hawks, while Jason Green, Avelar and Liam McGinnis had assists. The Hawks had to fight back twice in their third game against the Kitchener Junior Rangers Red team and completed the comeback with a 3-2 win. Lirette, Tavares and Farrow scored for the Hawks. Kaiden Gignac and Gill picked up assists. Cambridge moved onto the semifinals against the Oakville Rangers and won the game 4-3, with three minutes to go, on a Mueller deflection. The Hawks were down 2-0 after a period, but second-period goals by Gillis Haskell, Gill and Anthony Duarte gave Cambridge the lead. Oakville tied the game before Mueller’s heroics late in the frame. Schneider (2), Duarte, Mueller, Avelar and Lirette had assists. Goalie Benjamin Bates earned player of the game honours for the Hawks. In the finals, the Hawks faced Kitchener again in another low scoring game. The Rangers opened the scoring, but it was all Hawks after that. Haskell and Lirette scored on the power play and Cummings added some insurance for a 3-1 win. Avelar, Gignac, Farrow and Moura had assists. Goalie Ashton Moreira was named player of the game. The Hawks celebrated their win by sipping Gatorade from the Challenge Cup.
