Tryouts Completed
After three quick nights, the Minor Bantam Select Tryouts have been wrapped up. As a coaching staff the selection of the team was far from easy. Each and every boy played and competed at a very high level. The unfortunate part of a tryout is that someone leaves excited, while another is usually devastated.
For us as a coaching staff this is the absolute worst time. There is no part of coaching that is worse than releasing a boy. Contrary to what many believe, we coaches have hearts. I personally was cut from many, many teams and although I'm nearly 30 or 40 years removed from the events, I still remember the extreme disappointment I felt.
I wish I could say that the smiles on the faces of the boys that we picked for the team tonight outweighed the sadness I have burned in my being from watching a boy hold in tears.
It just doesn't. It flat out sucks, and if and when the day comes that it doesn't, then maybe that's the day I and we as a coaching staff should just walk away.
To all the boys who we had to release tonight, I hope that you will continue to believe in the game of hockey. Believe in yourself, and continue to work hard at making yourself the best player that you absolutely want... and can be.
To the parents of all the boys released... Each and every boy showed respect, dignity and class. All attributes that will serve them well in the future.
The coaching staff wants to thank them all of for their hard work over the last three days and we truly wish them well this year.
