Exciting Tournament
The Atom Select Hawks played their first tournament of the year in Oakville at the Frank Sabatino Tourney. See Summary below for game results and coaches comments.

The Hawks drew arguably the hardest division in the tourney but were ready to bring it!

Friday night the Hawks came up against an undefeated 10-0 Meadowvale Hawks team. The first period was a very fast paced exciting period. Back and forth the play went with chances going both ways. Meadowvale scored a late period goal to take a 1-0 lead. Great goaltending from Colin Matheson in the first period held it close.

The second period started the same, and through a properly executed defensive zone faceoff, it led to Cameron Squirrell getting the puck up to Brady Mackey who went in on a breakaway and fired it past the Meadowvale keeper and the game was tied at 1. The fans were loud and rocking it !!!!

The play was very even until Meadowvale score 2 very late goals, with a fortunate bounce, including one under a second to play gave them a 3-1 lead. The third period was much the same although Meadowvale fired in 2 more to win 5-1 although the scoreline didn't represent how close the game as we gave them a run for their money. Quite possibly the best first period of the season as that has been a focus of improvement for the Hawks.

Satuday morning, the Hawks took on a strong Burlington Bulldogs squad. Once again, the Hawks came out flying in the first period. Squirrell got the Hawks on the board, putting home a rebound of a Brady Mackey shot. Travis Nederpelt drawing the other assist. Shortly after, it was Nederpelt banging home a rebound, with Squirrell and Mackey drawing assists and the Hawks were up 2-0. Ryan Kilpatrick played an outstanding first period with some highlight saves. Burlington got on the board late which a seeing eye shot that found its way in the net.

The second period was high flying as well with opportunites going both ways. Nederpelt put the Hawks up 3-1 with a breakaway top shelf goal, his 2nd of the game, and almost buried a hattrick as he was sprung loose by Squirrell but just missed the top corner again. Burlington scored late in the 2nd and the score was 3-2 into the third. Burlington tied the game midway through and that scoreline held up. Cambridge almost snuck it out when Nicholas Silva's shot with seconds remaining just missed by inches.

The defense core of Jagger Adams, Ben Resendes, Adam Floto, Chloe Butler, Cameron DeSousa, Brayden French played a solid game and did a great job of shutting down the Burlington Offense.
The second game in a row with some great passing, great heads up play, and the HAWK1 breakout in effect.

Tourney game MVP - Travis Nederpelt
Hawks Hardhat - Jagger Adams

Saturday afternoon, the Hawks took on the Oakville Tigers (winners of previous tourney and runners up in this tournament). The Hawks knew they had to bring it to give the Tigers a run. The game was a rough one, as the referees let the players play and the Hawks stood up to the challenge.
The first period was fantastic as play went back and forth, chances at both ends, the Tigers knew the Hawks werent going to be rollovers.
Once again, the speed of the game was fast, and the passing from both teams was impressive.
The Hawks surrended a few goals in the 2nd and third and lost 6-0 but once again, the scoreline did not represent the quality of the game.

Tourney Game MVP - Cameron DeSousa
Hawks Hardhat - Matthew Mcconnell

Overall, the weekend was fun, entertaining for both parents, players, and coaches. It was great to see the improvement this team is making. All the skills learnt in practice are coming to reality in the games. The passing, faceoff strategies, breakout strategies are all evident. The hard work and effort from the players and coaching staff is showing and I am personally proud of what the Hawks brought to Oakville this weekend. What a great group of players and parents!

Also a special thank you to Lisa Burtt for the organization of the team pizza party and team lunch. They were great. Another great team bonding experience for the Hawks!

Great Job Hawks
Coach Bob
