Ottawa River Champs
An exciting weekend was had by all in Gatineau, QC from Dec 9th-11th, 2021. The boys played some great games and came out on top. All games were well attended with Grandparents even coming from as far away as Owen Sound to cheer on their Hawks.
A 5 game victory with a GF-GA of 25-3 was an impression display of this team's prowess.
The team started off on fire with a 7-0 opening game (despite the 8:30am start). Following that up on Friday evening was a 7-1 Victory over the Milton Winterhawks. Saturday afternoon saw some last minute heroics (and this team has a penchant for just such a thing) wherein they came back from a 2-1 deficit. With our goalie pulled for a 6 on 5 opportunity, Mark Lay popped in the tying goal with 6 seconds left in the game to get the tie. Later that evening we cruised to a 5-0 win for our 4th game.
Only the top two teams from 8 participants advanced to the final on Sunday. The West London Hawks and our team were the only 3-0-1 teams in the tourney. This time the boys kept their foot on the pedal from start to finish and played a hard fought but incredibly well rounded game in a 4-0 victory. Ben Shewchuk and Colin Matheson had 3 goals against for the entire tournament including Ben's 24 shot shutout for the Finals Win. This is a testament to both their skill level and the commitment of the TEAM to playing in all 3 zones. The final game against a very tough opponent is the highlight of this season thus far. They could not have played a more solid and complete game. The coaching staff are incredibly proud of these young men.
While it is sad to have some games cancelled we all look forward to a return to the ice in the new year and it was a heck of a way to end 2021. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the boys and their families.
