Minor Peewee A Hawks are International Silver Stick Champs!
After winning their Silver Stick qualifying tournament in December, the Minor Peewee A Hawks travelled to Newmarket this past weekend to compete in the International Finals.
Game 1
The Hawks took on the home town Newmarket Redmen in their opener. A first period penalty shot converted by Danny Dyson opened the scoring. Another Hawks goal by Kyle Caron assisted by Jacob Fletcher and Sam Collins gave them a 2-0 lead after 1. The lone goal of the 2nd period was an unassisted marker scored by Eric Cox. After Collins made it a 4-0 game with assists going to Alex Hall and Carson Frazer, the Hawks gave up a single to the Redmen before Collins sealed it with his second, assisted by Fletcher and Caron for a 5-1 final.
Game 2
Next up was the USA Patriots from Michigan. The Hawks dominated this game from start to finish. Cole Owen opened the scoring with assists to Frazer and Owen May. 2 second period goals by Caron and Dyson with assists to Hall and Owen extended the lead. Finishing the scoring in the third was Caron from Evan Mainville and Fletcher for a 4-0 final. A well earned shutout went to Evan Crowder.
Game 3
Next the Hawks pummeled the Nickel City Sharks from Sudbury 11-2. It was a bit of a mismatch with 3 Hawks players recording Hat Tricks in the game. Scoring was as follows, Goals to Fletcher (3), Caron (3), Dyson (3), Owen and Carswell. Assists went to Alex Spencer (2) Aidan Walsh (2), Cox (2), Fletcher (2) Collins (2), Caron (2), Mainville, Carswell, May.
Game 4
Next was a bit of a meaningless game with the Hawks division already sewn up heading to the playoff round. They still had to face a very tough team from Owen Sound. The Hawks weren’t able to beat the Attack goaltender for the first 2 periods despite carrying the play, trailing 1-0 ging to the third. In a back and forth final frame Caron scored 2 quick ones to take a very temporary lead (lone assist to Carswell), with the Attack responding with an equalizer. Owen Sound regained the lead a couple minutes later before the Hawks tied it up on a goal by Fletcher assisted by Owen and Collins with the net empty for a 3-3 final.
Game 5 Semi Finals
In the Semi Finals Saturday night the Hawks took on the Whitby Wildcats. In a fairly wide open game the Hawks would need great goaltending from Carter Rawn to move on to the finals, he delivered big in the first period saving a penalty shot that could have shifted momentum. 2 first period goals by Fletcher, both assisted by Caron and Cox opened up the lead, but Whitby cut it in half before the end of the frame. Kai Carswell scored the lone second period goal assisted by Caron and Fletcher, giving the Hawks a 3rd period lead. The Hawks struggled to hold on after playing most of the tournament with only 4 defencemen due to sickness. 2 Whitby goals in the last 5 minutes sent the game to overtime. In the second overtime period the Hawks would not be denied as Fletcher scored from the slot sending them to the finals Sunday.
Game 6 Finals
A rematch with the Home Town Newmarket Redmen awaited the Hawks. They had upset the Brantford 99ers in the other semi final and were on a roll. The Hawks opened the scoring on a goal by Walsh assisted by May and Collins. With the Redmen goaltender making some great saves to keep his team in it they managed to score 2 goals to take the lead before Cole Owen tied it up, with an assist going to Mainville, before the end of the second. With the Hawks pouring it on in the third they took the lead on a goal by Kai Carswell assisted by Alex Hall. The Hawks strong team defence locked it down the rest of the way and earned the 3-2 victory despite a lopsided shots total of 33-13 for Cambridge.
The coaching staff is very proud of this group of young men and the way they came together to win this very special championship. I hope all the boys remember this for a long time.
