Mel Snook 1955 - 2015
It is with a very heavy heart I am posting this article about the passing of one of our family members at Cambridge Minor Hockey.  Mel Snook, the Head Coach of the Penguins passed away suddenly Monday, November 9th.
I met Mel a year ago when he came on board as a Head Coach for the Minor Atom Flyers. His Grandson Zach was on the team. This was Mel's 2nd year accepting a Head Coach position for me in CMHA. He was one of the most amazing people and Coaches I have ever known in the 15yrs I have been with CMHA. It was certainly a true honor to have know him.
I only knew Mel at the rink and of course the chance run ins at Zehrs.

Mel had a true passion for Coaching and for the game of Hockey. He always took the time to explain rules and techniques to his players.  Mel told me once he had been a Referee "many moons ago" he always shook the hands of the Referees after every game and took the time to let them know they had done a great job.
Mell also took the time to shake the hand of the Coach from the Opposing team after the game as well.
I remember last season in Minor Atom, we had a meeting for player movement. This is not an easy task to complete, I informed the Coaches I would make all the calls to the parents of the players being moved.  Knowing this was not something I was looking forward to, Mel walked up to me after the meeting, patted me on the back and said " you got this kid" winked and got into his car. Not sure if he knew at the time, but this small gesture made me feel good.
At the end of last season, I received a lovely email from Mel thanking me for all I had done thru the season. I am so glad I am a "pack rat" and kept the email. His one sentence to me said the following:
"It is volunteers such as you that leave a standing impression, and makes you want to continue in a coaching role."
I want to just say, No Mel, it is Coaches like you who leave a standing impression and make me want to continue as a Convenor year after year.
Mel, you were taken far too soon, and you will be greatly missed!

For anyone who would like to pay their respects to Mel and his dear family I have listed the visitation information:
