Galt Minor Hockey School’s tribute to “Big” Al Findlay
Submitted By webmaster on Monday, December 14, 2020
It is with heavy hearts, the Galt Minor Hockey School family says, “Until we will meet again, someday” to our mentor “Big” Al Findlay.  Al was genuinely loved by every soul he touched.  He was a husband, a father, a friend, a third parent, a spirit lifter, a confidant, and someone we all could lean on when we needed it the most.  His thoughtfulness was admired by everyone.

Although we are deeply saddened by the news of Al's passing, we would like to remember what a stalwart supporter he was for our great Cambridge community and to each of us personally.

Words cannot express the importance of this wonderful and caring individual. Highlights taken from Al’s Cambridge Sports Hall of Fame induction write up:

Beginning in 1971, Al started coaching hockey in Preston for 15 years.  Working at the arena, he became a part of the Preston Figure Skating Club.  He also ran an industrial curling League for several years downtown.  In 1981, he helped start the Cambridge Bulldogs Jr. Intercounty baseball team and was involved with Cambridge Minor Softball for 10 to 12 years.  Al made his mark when he became the director of the Galt Minor Hockey School in 1989 and ran the programs for 22 years.  He was also a founding member of the Cambridge Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.

Admittedly, if it were not for the support of Al's wife Donna, his 50-year legacy serving the youth of Cambridge, would not have been possible.  Her understanding of how important his community was to him, allowed us all to benefit from something special.

We will miss you everyday my forever friend and have cherished the words of wisdom you shared over the years.  Your shoes will never be filled.

Larry Kitzman
GMHS Director on behalf of the Galt Minor Hockey School family

Cambridge Minor Hockey lost a true friend and supporter this weekend with the passing of Al Findlay.  It is difficult to put into words what Al meant to youth hockey in our City, but it is without a doubt better, for having him in it.
