U13 A Hawks Champions in Belleville Tourney
The U13 A Cambridge Hawks travelled to Belleville the first weekend in November and cam home Champions of the Belleville Mid Season Tilt tournament.
Cambridge opened the tournament with two decisive 6-0 wins over the host Belleville Bulls and the Barrie Colts. The next day they followed that up with two 4-1 victories over the TNT Tornados and the Upper York Admirals.
While the offence led the way in the first 4 victories, outstanding defending and goaltending carried the Hawks through the semi-finals and finals.
The semi-finals had the Hawks in a rematch against Barrie. The Colts came out hard and the 2 teams battled to a scoreless tie after regulation. The 4 on 4 overtime saw the Hawks apply all sorts of pressure but they couldn't break the stalemate. This game went to a 3 player shootout. The Hawks chose to go second and after Barrie was stopped on their first shot, Cambridge finally put a puck in the back of the net on their first shot. Both Barrie and Cambridge were unsuccessful in their second shots. With the game on the line, the Cambridge goaltender stopped the third Barrie shooter giving Cambridge the win.
The finals had the Hawks matched up against the Talbot Trail Blazers. In their first 5 games of the tournament, Talbot had scored 42 goals and given up 2. They hadn't experienced a loss yet this season. Cambridge came out flying and by the end of the first period had a 2-1 lead, shocking their opponents. Talbot pulled back within one goal in the second period of on the power play. Cambridge's determination from the goaltender to every skater to not allow Talbot to get another goal was outstanding. The Hawks sealed the victory with an empty net goal with 18 seconds to play.
