Volunteer Opportunities - Treasurer
Summary
The Cambridge Minor Hockey Association (CMHA) is seeking to appoint a volunteer Treasurer with accounting or financial experience to its Board of Directors. The primary purpose of the Treasurer is to bring an objective perspective to Board financial discussions and to support the Board’s financial literacy. The Treasurer is a non-voting member of the Board of Directors, and reports to the President. In addition to an individual with a strong financial background, preference will be given to someone with previous volunteer Board of Directors experience. As a volunteer, the Treasurer is ineligible to receive compensation.
Description of Cambridge Minor Hockey Association
The Board of Directors is the legal authority for the Cambridge Minor Hockey Association, a not-for-profit corporation with a commitment to the growth and financial well-being of the organization and it's objectives:
-To foster a general community spirit among its members, supporters, and teams;
-To maintain and increase the interest in the game of hockey;
-To have and exercise a general care, supervision, and direction over the playing interest of its teams and players
RESPONSIBILITIES
General
-Preparing for and attending Board meetings, the Annual General Meeting, strategic Board planning meetings, and other meetings as required
-Participating in discussions and decisions on matters of strategy, risk management, policy, finance, programs, and personnel
-Supporting the Board to help ensure Directors are adequately informed of financial and risk=related issues to inform decision making
-Reviewing business plans, business plan amendments, and significant organizational expenditures and/or commitments, as required
-Coordinating and preparing the annual budgets
-Preparing all necessary accounting and reports for submission to auditors including CMHA and Galt Minor Hockey School
-Participating in an annual review with the President and/or finance subcommittee where appropriate
Monthly
-Preparing accounting reports for distribution to Board Members for review and authorization
-Preparing monthly financial statements, including a balance sheet and a profit and loss statement for CMHA, to be presented at the Board Meetings
Ongoing
-Supporting CMHA office personnel with day-to-day financial operations of the organization including payments, and expense tracking
QUALIFICATIONS
Previous finance and/or accounting experience is required, and preference will be given to candidates possessing a CPA designation. The successful candidate will be able to commit to fulfilling all Board responsibilities, comply with all organizational policies, and be willing to contribute constructively and respectfully in Board and subcommittee meetings. As a member of the Board, the Treasurer must possess advanced communication skills and demonstrate a desire to build positive relationships with fellow board members and office personnel.
COMPETENCIES
-Previous experience related to finance and/or accounting is required
-Previous experience serving on a Board of Directors would be considered an asset
TIME COMMITMENT
The expected time commitment is approximately 10-15 hours per month. Board meetings are monthly from September to May, with the Annual General Meeting scheduled in June. Meetings are traditionally held on the 4th Tuesday of the month from 7:00-9:00 pm. Additional special meetings may be called at the discretion of the President.
