Getting to know Coach Travis:

What inspired you to become a hockey coach?

My inspiration to become a hockey coach stems from a deep-rooted love for the game and the life lessons it taught me throughout my playing career. From a young age, hockey was more than just a sport – it was a way to challenge myself, build resilience, and form meaningful connections with teammates. As I progressed in my playing career, I began to recognize the profound impact that coaches had on my own development, both as a player and as a person.

The turning point for me was realizing that hockey had shaped my character in ways that extended far beyond the rink. The discipline, teamwork, and problem-solving skills I developed were invaluable, and I wanted to help young players experience those same benefits. I saw coaching as an opportunity not only to teach hockey skills but also to mentor and inspire the next generation of athletes. I wanted to be the kind of coach who could help players unlock their potential, both in the game and in their personal lives.

Ultimately, it was my desire to give back to the sport that had given me so much, and to contribute to the growth of players on and off the ice, that inspired me to become a coach. The chance to shape young athletes' experiences and to be a positive influence in their lives motivates me every day.

How do you foster team culture?

Fostering a positive and cohesive team culture is a cornerstone of my coaching philosophy. I believe that the foundation of any successful team is built on mutual respect, trust, and open communication. From the moment players step on the ice, I strive to create an environment where each individual feels valued and integral to the team's success.

First and foremost, I emphasize the importance of collaboration over individual achievement.
While individual talent is crucial, it's the collective effort of the team that leads to long-term success. I encourage players to support one another, to celebrate each other’s achievements, and to lift each other up during challenging moments. This creates a sense of camaraderie and unity, both of which are vital to a strong team dynamic.

I also place a high value on accountability, where every player understands their role within the team and is committed to contributing to the group's success. This includes setting clear expectations, establishing team goals, and promoting an environment where constructive feedback is welcomed, not feared. By focusing on self-improvement and team growth, we create a culture of continuous development.

Additionally, I make it a priority to build relationships off the ice, as I believe that strong personal connections translate into stronger on-ice performance. Whether through team-building activities, group discussions, or simply getting to know the players on a deeper level, I encourage a family-like atmosphere where everyone feels like they belong and have a shared purpose.

Ultimately, fostering a positive team culture is about more than just teaching hockey – it’s about shaping individuals into team players who understand the power of collaboration, empathy, and leadership. By instilling these values, I aim to create a culture where players are motivated to push their limits, work together, and thrive as a unit.

What does it feel like to be coached by me?

Being coached by me feels supportive and empowering. I strive to create a positive and inclusive environment where every player feels valued. My coaching style emphasizes open communication, allowing players to express their ideas and concerns. I focus on skill development while also encouraging teamwork and sportsmanship. Players will feel motivated and inspired to push their boundaries, knowing that I believe in their potential. Ultimately, I aim
to cultivate not only better hockey players but also confident individuals who enjoy the game and grow through their experiences.

What do you want your players to learn or take away from this season?

This season, I want my players to learn the importance of teamwork, discipline, and resilience while also honing their hockey skills. It's essential for them to develop fundamental techniques and strategies that will enhance their performance on the ice. I aim for them to build confidence in themselves as players, understanding that growth comes from both successes and setbacks.

I want them to take away valuable life skills, such as effective communication and accountability.

Ultimately, I hope they leave the season with lasting memories, strong relationships, and a deeper passion for the game, ready to face future challenges with self-assurance.
