Getting to know Coach Zac:

What inspired you to become a hockey coach?

While growing up hockey was a part of everything I did, whether it was playing Ice hockey in a formal setting or out on the rink my grandfather would make for me every winter. It was watching the Leafs on hockey night in Canada and playing road hockey or mini sticks with my brothers. Once playing competitively was done, I volunteered with the Galt Minor hockey school, which grew a passion for developing future athletes and getting them to their full potential. This led me into coaching and has continued to be my inspiration in coaching any team.

How do you foster team culture?

I build a strong hockey culture by establishing clear, consistent expectations grounded in respect, accountability, work ethic, and pride in the crest on our jersey. Our culture starts with how we carry ourselves every day - on the ice, in the dressing room, in the community. We hold each other to a high standard because great teams are built on trust, discipline, and shared commitment.
I aim to create an environment where players feel supported as people and challenged as competitors. Open communication is a cornerstone of our program; players are encouraged to speak honestly, ask questions, and learn from mistakes without fear. At the same time, we emphasize personal responsibility - every player understands their role, prepares with purpose, and contributes to the success of the group. Our daily habits define who we are.
Practices are structured, competitive, and purposeful, reinforcing pace, resilience and teamwork. We celebrate effort just as much as results, because consistent effort builds confidence and earns respect within the room. Leadership is shared - returning players set the tone, while new players learn what it means to be a great teammate, and everyone understands that culture is not owned by coaches alone but shaped by every individual in the locker room.
Ultimately, our goal is to develop players who compete hard, support one another, and represent the team with integrity. Culture is not just a slogan - it is something we build together through actions, protect through accountability, and carry with us every time we step on the ice.

What does it feel like to be coached by me?

Being coached by me is demanding, structured, and supportive. Players are pushed to compete at a high level every day while knowing they are respected and valued as individuals. I hold players accountable but also invest in their growth, both on and off the ice. Practices are competitive and purposeful, and feedback is honest and direct, always with the goal of helping players improve and gain confidence. Athletes know they will be challenged—but they will also be prepared.

What do you want your players to learn or take away from this season?

I want players to leave the season better hockey players, stronger teammates, and more confident young adults. On the ice, they will develop skills, hockey IQ, and the ability to compete consistently. Off the ice, they will learn discipline, resilience, teamwork, and how to handle adversity. Most importantly, I want players to understand the value of effort, preparation, and respect—lessons that extend beyond hockey into school, other sports, and everyday life.

Who is your favorite NHL team?

My favorite hockey team is the Toronto Maple Leafs

Who is your favorite retired player? Favorite Current Player?

My Favourite retired player is Wendel Clark, he played for my childhood team and shares a good last name, but on the ice - he could score, skate, and change momentum, Clark played with pure grit. Big hits, big goals, never backing down and he left everything on the ice, another reason was he captain of the Leafs and played with a ton of pride. A lot of fans respect how much he seemed to genuinely care about the jersey and the city.

My Favourite current NHL player is Auston Matthews. His Elite goal scoring – His release is ridiculous. The way he can score from weird angles and tight spaces makes every shift feel dangerous. He is very exciting to watch.

I would like to see the Leafs obviously, but in all likelihood I see Tampa Bay Making a deep run and push for the cup. Coach Jon Cooper knows how to win.

Away from the rink you will find me enjoying trips to the family cottage with my wife and our two dogs or enjoying a campfire in the backyard.

Anything else you want people to know about you?

I believe success isn’t measured solely by wins and losses, but by growth, discipline, and the habits players build along the way. I am committed to creating a positive, competitive environment where athletes are challenged to reach new levels while learning how to be good teammates and leaders. My goal is to help players maximize their potential and leave the program with skills and values that last far beyond the season.
