Preston International tournament
The 60th annual Preston International tournament has come and gone and the team came to play.

First game saw our HAWKS dominate right from the puck drop and ended up with an 8 - 1 victory vs the team from Stratford.

HAWKS goals scored by SHEWCHUK (2) BELBECK (2) WHYTE (2) GARDNER and POWER.

2nd game saw us matchup up against the Blue team from Kitchener.  HAWKS got off to a little bit of a slow start but managed to squeeze out a 4 - 0 shutout victory.  FERNANDES was credited with the shutout with goals going to GARDNER, BENDER, GALVAO and WHYTE.

With the HAWKS starting the tourney with a 2 and 0 record they needed to win the 3rd game to clinch first place in round robin play.  There next opponent would be the Waterloo Wolves.  HAWKS came out strong again and played great 2 way hockey and pulled out another shutout victory.  Despite the sun shining in MATHESON’S eyes for a couple mins of the game she was able to post the donut on the Wolves. All the defensive lines were on fire. GARDNER, O’BRIEN, WESTWOOD, BRAGANCA, KNOWLES and MCLEOD worked to ensure the puck stayed in the offensive zone.  HAWKS goals were scored by SHEWCHUK (2) WHYTE, BENDER and GALVAO.

Saturday’s semi-final game saw the team back at Galt Arena Gardens to once again play the team from Stratford.  HAWKS flexed their muscles from the start and finished with a 9 to 0 victory.  FERNANDES posted his second shutout in as many days.  HAWKS goals were scored by GARDNER (3) POWER (2) SHEWCHUK, GILLIES, GALVAO AND O'BRIEN.

Off to the FINALS we go!

The Cambridge Mall ice pad was the venue of the championship game between our HAWKS and the Kitchener Rangers Blue team.  It was a sluggish beginning to the game to say the least with defense needing to get tough.  The first period ended with the score tied at 0.  HAWKS opened it up in the 2nd on goals by WHYTE, WESTWOOD and GARDNER.  SHEWCHUK added another in the 3rd and then the clock ran to double zero.   HAWKS WIN HAWKS WIN HAWKS WIN!   4 - 0 in the championship game and another shutout for MATHESON as well.

It was a great weekend for the HAWKS as it was a total team effort in walking away with the first place trophies.  Congrats to all the players and coaching staff on a well-deserved tourney win.
